Ford GT--Timeless

Last weekend I went to a couple of car shows and drove the 458, 10 Viper vert and Heritage.

The snake is a blast, particularly in vert form. A bit tight though for my 6'4" unchiseled frame.

The 458 is the epitome of technology, classic design and sheer quickness.

But, the 6 year old Gulf may be the best driving experience of all of these. Just so fluid and smooth and just the little things like a better stereo and much better A/C than the F car.

And, the GT got all the looks and questions (one woman-- "did it take you long to paint it?" me "not really, I have a lot of spare time")

Don't sell your cars.

I have to agree. I really like my 458, but the GT is indeed timeless to me too. Both of mine are all black. Someone on this forum once said (don't recall who) that angles on a car design may be cool, but it's the curves that are timeless. The curved rear 'haunches' of the GT and overall lines will be attractive for decades more to come, while Ferraris and Lambos often look quite dated over time (think of the original Countach). If only Ford keeps making all parts for the GT, I'll have mine until I can no longer drive.

i saw a 458 for the first time in person last weekend at the Mojave race and i was amazed at how different it looks in person than in the mags. imo the car only looks good from the side looking at it from a distance so you don't see the top of the car. standing next to the car and looking down on it > the top of the car looked horrible from front to back especially the top of the rear of the car which looked too rectangular with respect to the rest of the cars curves....

i like the interior of a 430 better than a 458 but both cars just do not have enough TORQUE for me.

the car had a very wimpy exhaust note like a prancing horse that would break if pushed to hard, lol

the Lambo Murci SV that was there was much more my speed as it was just more muscular....

the only Ferrari i would get would be an Enzo....

i saw a 458 for the first time in person last weekend at the Mojave race and i was amazed at how different it looks in person than in the mags. imo the car only looks good from the side looking at it from a distance so you don't see the top of the car. standing next to the car and looking down on it > the top of the car looked horrible from front to back especially the top of the rear of the car which looked too rectangular with respect to the rest of the cars curves....

A couple weeks back, wifey and I were 'stuck' side-by-side with a 458 for several blocks heading up Scottsdale Rd (Arizona for you foreigners!), and I hafta disagree with ya, Freddy! IT'S DARN FINE LOOKIN' from any angle IMO! I do agree with ya on one point though; the famed sound of its mill DID seem juuuuust a little too "Japanese motorcycle" to me.

Sound would depend on setting he had it in. In race mode it is plenty loud and throaty as just about anything out there.

I'm pretty much in the same line. Growing up, the foreign exotics never held all that much fascination for me. I was a muscle car guy from the time I knew what cars were. I read and enjoyed the stories of the 60s GT40s but as there were so few and high $$ never really thought much then about owning one. Then came 2003 and the North American Auto Show. Later when Ford announced they would build the GT for sale, I knew there was a very large item in my bucket list. Had to happen some day. Took me a few years to get here. The other exotics have only recently caught my eye, but more of a comparison to what I have than any desire to own.

Race mode is only funny until you use it. The 458 is amazing the way it actually toggles from "DD" to "balls to the wall". I don't know how it will age, but I know it's definitely one of the best cars ever built period. I'm not a major Ferrari guy either.

Otherwise, you are definitely right. Today, PeakCompletions Claus sent up his 2011 LP570-4 Performante. Another majorly awesome car. Fast, great exhaust note, drenched in amazing carbon fiber and alcantara, and grip for days. I drove it about 80 miles and then had to do some GT driving. The GT is just home. That cockpit, the steering feel, the sound of the engine...it doesn't age. The only thing it's missing compared to the newer cars is pure speed, and that's easily remedied. The things the GT does well will never age. I've still never been in another car that works as a whole the way the GT does. It's like the car becomes an extension of you when you use the pedals or click the shifter. Doesn't hurt that it's still the most beautiful car on the road. You really need to always make sure you've got another GT in front of you so you can admire the 3/4 rear angle. No matter how good it looks sitting still, nothing compares to the way it looks hurtling down the road.

The A/C on the GT is amazing

I remember many 95+ days where I get out of car and the metal on my watch case is frosted up from side vent cooling my wrist...even with 220 on temp gauge...

No other super car can cool like that...maybe Gallardo...

Before I bought the GT, someone here told me the A/C was colder than his ex-wifes heart & you could hang meat in there...

Never forgot that; closed the deal for me. I am an A/C psycho, & hate to get out of a car soaked.

Be thankful you don't own a '68 - ITS ACCELERATOR PEDAL COULD DO THE SAME THING...in fact, it'd probably burst those burritos into flames!

Meantime, Japanese bikes are the cats meow...nothing beats 'em in the streets or on the drag strip, and they compete and even win the GP races too...all for a fraction of the competitor's machines. They do not require much maintenance either. They are the FGT of bikes. I don't know about the bikes you've heard, but my ZX14 Ninja has rumble, roar and TQ/HP to die for. It's an 8-second bike. I know what you mean though...
