I'm trailering my GT to a friends house for a few days. I have a friend supplying the enclosed trailer.

Can anyone share any tips, tricks, or thoughts around the trailer process and specifically tie down points?

Thank you!

You need the wheel "baskets" Do not tie down through the wheels, lash the control arms or leave in gear...

There is a section in the FGT manual that gives all the secrets....

I don't have mine handy... EP you there you post whore?

Where do I get the baskets? I'm not sure I have time to acquire these before the shipping date.

I'll check out the manual. Thanks.

here is where I grabbed my straps from in AZ.I would bet you have the same sort of place near you. i used the ones that go over the wheels and are held in place on the tire by three plastic pieces that stop the strap from moving side to side. I looked for baskets but they were a special order for our size. You may have better luck though.

I will look for some photos and send them to you if i find any.

Yeah, I'm here, you mizzerbull...but, 'twould appear MN's question has already been answered, now wouldn't it! :slap

So what happens if for any reason the GT breaks down/wont start/needs a tow. Lets face it. These things happen. I drove my antique KR 500 miles to SAAC 34 and 500 back. Anything could have happened.
There is now way a tow company is going to have anything other than a flatbed with winch or a traditional hook.
What do you do?
What have people done?
Why cant you go through the wheels?
THnx
Bill

Well, you know...hadta do a lotta really important stuff, like...uh...like...I hadta uh...make sure...WELL I JUST HAD MORE PRESSING THINGS TO DO. :bored

Why cant you go through the wheels?

Reason would suggest that should be no problem if: (A) the straps weren't cinched tighter than a fiddle string, and, (B) one made sure there was ample soft material placed between the straps and the wheel surfaces. When you boil it all down, there really isn't 10 cents worth of 'bottom line' difference between doing that and using baskets.

Of course, "other opinions may (and usually will) vary" on that! :biggrin

If you use enough microfiber towels to separate the wheel surface from the tie down strap, you will be okay.

:agree:

And don't EVER tie down using the tow hook - and don't EVER leave home without the tow hook!

I go thru the wheels.. done 3 or 4 cross country trips.. 30 000 plus miles no issues,, car should be in neutral and no ebrake per the manual. I use some seat belt cushions to protect the wheels from the straps,, see my old post.. last photo shows cushion,

Or the keys! Don't ask me how I know.

I like stormcat use seatbelt shoulder cushions to protect my wheels and have had no problems. The rear straps I cross and the front straps I don't. Tomy Hamon

Thru the wheels works for me as well. With towel protection on the strap thru the wheel openings.

I have strapped fore/aft not crossing. I find there can be strap crossing interference with the diffuser duct fins in the rear so just tiedown north/south. Worked fine for me.

Here is my solution. Wheel nets by Macs. They custom design each net to fit your individual tire size and guarantee the fit. No slipping, no rubbing (the towel is just a precaution), no worries.PICT0140a.JPGPICT0135.JPG

Jeff & I have found it much easier to drive to the destinations - and we get to enjoy driving a Ford GT, instead of the "joy?" of trailering it....

Like many others, I also go through the wheels when I tow. The wheel baskets are great, but you need anchor plates or something similar, two per wheel.

Mac's is a great company with many high quality trailering parts. I use their strap sleeves for protection against the painted wheel finish.

Good luck!
