It is not allowed in my house and the positives indicated in the study are horseshit, IMO. Keep your young teens off facebook and tell them to make friends the old fashioned way. We have enough narcissists in this world.

Those are some tough rules. Could they be, just using it after walking out the door. I'm afraid we are stuck with it until the next wave comes along.

Seems to me the bad outweighs the good for kids and probably most adults.
 
I'd question the causation...I like this perspective - "FB isn't the cause of narcissism--it's just a reflection of it."

From Lust/Porn, to Sloth/Games, to Wrath/Hate site, to Vanity/FB

Only way to combat it is sideline it with something better TV Killed Radio, Cable killed TV, Mobile Killed Phone.

OR, wait till its uncool...remember Friendster...was bigger than FB.

Posting to walls, poking, and Friending will be like Telegrams...as soon as FB utility b/c part of all open-platforms.

I would not classify them as users.
 
I got on Facebook because I had clients on there and some car buddies. What happens next is people you haven't talked to (usually for good reason) start friending you as well as an odd assortment of distant relatives etc. You feel like an ass if you don't accept the friend request.

Next thing you know you have a bunch of folks who apparently have nothing to do telling you about every conceivable boring detail of their lives ("going to the gym today", "car is in the shop" little Hunter turns 12 today") excruciating.

So true, most of the time I hit "ignore". I wasn't friendly with these people in high school, not about to start now.

+1. :agree: Signed up 4 years back to view picks of a friends new home on Roatan, been mostly down hill from there. I have about 100 "friends" now and I don't know 30 of them. Much like you drummer I don't wish to be rude so I friend them. I think it has become a game to many on FB to see who can have the largest friend list. Some requests I get the people have over 450 "friends".... hell, my entire high school graduating class had less that 250.
 
It’s a new world of information. I have had many people disagree with me about “spying” on kids internet/phone usage but I think it’s just a standard modus operandi for parents, in any era.The goal is not to catch them doing something wrong but to protect them from others who would.

your kids are watching your facebook as they watch you spend their college fund on GT upgrades (I've already spent my grandkids that haven't been born yet's college fund.....lol). ;)
 
Have no desire to "join" FB and kinda agree with Rush, Facebook is for "followers".

I initially signed up on it in it's infancy - as it seemed a better group of people than MySpace. However, I never put up much info on my page - none on MySpace. After about 8-10 months, I was thrown off - Posted some Picasso & Goya paintings that they didn't like.

Best thing that ever happened, as I was tending to spend too much time there - like the FordGTForum!!

Glad I got away from it - and cancelled the MySpace .

How many of those "friends" would show up if you ever needed furniture moved?
 
I am on the "not on FB" side for many reasons including those stated.

It has been said that a friend will help you move but a good friend will help you move a body.
