Ford to shut down Mercury

Apparently it is official that Ford will drop the Mercury brand.
I know Merc is only abut 6% of Ford, and >= to 1% of US autos, but still sad when you think of the Merc history.

I never really understood multiple brands operating under one umbrella. It seems to me that is one way to unnecessarily replicate Overhead/Administrative costs.

What Japanese or European Manufacturer does that?

I think that all the VW brands show some interest. The problem with Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Mercury, etc. is they lost their image. You could really re-badge a Chevy or Ford and get these. :frown

I was pointing out only those companies that actually sold cars with common chassis under different brands. Lambo chasis are unique, but other parts are shared.
