NHRA to be renamed BSRA (Well, it should)

I think it speaks poorly of the NHRA that one man is able to have such an immense negative impact on any major motorsport. The vast majority of drivers didn't like four-wide drag racing for safety and other reasons and the fans didn't like it either because it was more like a circus than a man (or woman) to man competition. Yet Bruton Smith was able to strong-arm NHRA management into ignoring both groups in order to help him attempt to recover from bad market research and the resulting foolish investment. Since we now know how much influence he has over the lives of the drivers and the wishes of the fans, I think it is only fitting that the organization should be known as the Bruton Smith Racing Association. I'm through watching the BSRA on TV and in person.

The following is from an ESPN website:

Only two weeks after NHRA competitors sent a letter to the NHRA saying they would not race another four-wide event, the NHRA announced Saturday that four-wide drag racing would return next year to the zMax Dragway in Concord, N.C.

An agreement was reached Saturday morning at Las Vegas in a meeting between NHRA officials and members of the Professional Racers Owners Organization (PRO), the team owners and drivers group which voted against four-wide racing 60-3 on a petition circulated during the inaugural four-wide event last month at zMax.

The Four-Wide Nationals were the first time in NHRA history that four cars raced down the track at the same time.

Some fans loved it and some hated it, but PRO listed four concerns for not doing it again: safety issues, confusion, sponsor identification problems and a circus-like atmosphere. The letter PRO sent to the NHRA also said they were willing to race four-wide in an exhibition or all-star event.

Bruton Smith, chairman of Speedway Motorsports Inc. and owner of the zMax Dragway (the first four-wide facility) was angry about the PRO letter and said he expected to race four-wide again next year. He was thrilled when he heard the NHRA's decision Saturday.

I'm with you.

Dave,

+1 to your comments. 4 wide drag racing is like having 4 basketball teams on the court at one time. A circus yes, but not a sport. :thumbsdow

But...I bet it would be crazy fun to be standing on the top end when 32,000HP came across the line:wink

Haha same here!

That four wide racing is for the birds! Two lanes is the only way to go. What if somebody blows up and jumps a lane or two?

4 lane= crap

Shadowman

I for sure "do not" care for it

What if somebody blows up and jumps a lane or two?

That was/is my main concern, too.

A SMALLER issue strictly from the spectator's point of view is - one only has HALF the time to actually WATCH any 2 of the 4 cars at any one time. :willy

Reminds me of SkierX (4-6 ski competitors) versus traditional Dual Format head-to-head Pro Ski Racing - no thanks, dual competition is always more exciting! (and hurts a lot less people)

1000 foot racing is even worse imo. i say lengthen the shutdown area on all these tracks and bring back 1/4 mile (1320 feet) drag racing as it should be for the fuel cars.

also if they lengthen the shutdown area on all these tracks they can lift the speed cap on the jet cars and you will see more 300+ mph passes for jet cars.

oh yeah and one more thing, 1/8 mile racing is on the same level as autocross to me. it is just queer......

I'm going to show my age here.... Back in the very late sixties we were racing 4 wide at New York National Speedway, a dragstrip out on Long Island in the town of Center Moriches. That track was the first place I ever saw Don Garlits, Ronnie Sox & Buddy Martin, Hayden Profit, Dick Harrell, and many more very famous early drag racers. This was IHRA sanctioned (International Hot Rod Association), but they only did the 4 wide racing with the amateur classes.

As a driver, only hitting 100 to 110 mph in the quarter, it was no big deal either way. I have no idea what the spectators thought of it. I always assumed it was a way of getting eliminations to finish more quickly. I watched the NHRA 4 wide event and was not impressed. I would very much prefer that they keep it to two at a time. I also agree that they should work on the shut down areas, where they can, and bring back 1320 for the fuel classes.

Just my 2 cents,

Amen to that. It's NOT "qtr mile drag racing" if cars aren't racing a full qtr mile.

Any future 'tracks built should be required to have the longer shutdown areas or just not be sanctioned. Otherwise, all we'll see from now on is the "hundred yard dashes" we're presently seeing in T/F & funny. :frown

The NHRA is in the entertainment business. Shorter runs reduce breakage and time between rounds. If they wanted, they could regulate fuel delivery and go back to 1320 right now, but lean engines burn up. Burning cars stop the show. I would also love to see it go back to 1320. Four wide is a novelty now just like it was years ago. It will die of natural causes.
