How Much HP needed to drop a sec off 0 to 60

Hi,

IF WE CAN GET 0 TO 60 IN 3.3 SECS-- FROM THE FACTORY...........

HOW MUCH HORSEPOWER IS NEEDED TO DROP YOUR O TO 60 TIME TO
LETS SAY:

O TO 60 IN 3.2
0 TO 60 3.1
3.0...
I GUESS MY QUESTION IS ..HOW MUCH HP FOR EACH TENTH OF A SECOND YOU DROP OFF YOUR O TO 60 TIME????????????

You just need traction. A stock car with Hoosier A6's can probably crack the 3 sec barrier with a good driver and warm tires....horsepower on these cars really only comes into play above 60 mph. Look to 1/4 mile trap speeds for a true measure of HP...a stock car will trap in the 125-127 mph range, and modded cars can do 130+.

As a general rule it takes four times the horsepower to go twice as fast. Obviously the compounding of hp has much to do with aerodynamic resistance, but HOW much between 0 and 60? :confused

If we just assume this estimate is correct (traction aside) to go 0-60 in half the time, 1.65 seconds you would need 2,200 hp.

From a practical standpoint this is absolutely true. I was looking at the question from a theoretical standpoint! :biggrin

4 wheel drive would make it happen a little quicker and with less HP.
 
I assume you mean tenth of a second? To drop an entire second it would take alot!
 
Actually the Hoosier is a better drag race tire than the BFG drag radial.

(Take a look at Fast Ford and muscle Mustang story about 2 years back)

We could not get a sub 3.0, but there was a few 3.19 0-60

Runs made in the SVT parking lot.

And then back to Zero before we ran out of parking lot.

I agree with the Doc.
Ample power is there, you just need to provide the traction to capture the acceleration potential.
Although true, aerodynamic loads increase to the second power, aero loads or wind resistance should not be a considerable factor in speeds under 60 mph.
 
in order to win the race you must finish the race first :cool

that said a quick sixty foot time will win the race......

Geez!! I can't believe you guys, the answer is simple....
Exactly 237.93847568 more horsepower (or 735.93847568SAE net crank horsepower given driveline loss) to move the GT from a standardized 3.3 seconds 0 to 60 time to exactly 2.989744 seconds 0 to 60 miles per hour. Everyone knows that!

:rofl:rofl:rofl But I think you rounded up by using only an 12 digit calculator. My 15 digit calculator says that I need 0.00000004725 less horsepower, and it's 2.989743519 seconds. Do you see how you rounded up for a higher 0-60 time?? :cheers

I used to be able to launch my old Viper pretty well 0-60, but honestly I have not had the heart to try a hard launch on the GT yet. Drive her fast...yes...dump the clutch for a full out launch....no. How are you guys getting your best launches??? Inquiring minds want to know. :wink

Time for a little technique sharing. :cheers
 
By the way....interesting calculations to figure out how to get to sub 3 seconds. But what is this calculator thing you are using to figure it out???? :lol

(just kidding...I am not quite that tech challenged....but close)
 
rev until banging off the rev limiter, close your eyes and dump the clutch:biggrin

just kidding but its a cool visual:lol

I usually ride the clutch and try to find the limit of how quickly you can come off the clutch versus when traction is lost, surely its a trial and error process, but a fun one.
