Advice needed: Older stereo equipment...

The x is moving and my 5 years of free crap storage has come to an end. I helped her clean out the attic and along with lots of bullshit going to the dump, I now have my old stereo system back. This stuff is in great shape, still in the boxes with the manuals etc. I boxed it up when we moved to that place 17 years ago and I got the surround and home theater.

I hate to take this to the dump but hate to store it too. I'm building a new house that will have a killer media room, but it won't be ready for a year and I can't see using this stuff in there anyway. I may cover one of the walls with old album covers (had about 200 vinyl records up there, probably all warped to shit).

My question: Is there anywhere to sell or donate this stuff? Does it have any value? Anyone else faced this dilemma? I've yet to check Ebay but thought I'd ask here first since I've never failed to get some great answers out of this group.

Thanks in advance!

What gear exactly?

I suspect the speakers are only fit for the fire (but will reserve opinion) - the reason being that the crossover technology, speaker doping, and speaker suspension technology has moved on a bit since then.

The other stuff might be interesting though.... There's is certainly interest in older gear on this side of the pond, but it needs to be A1 kit rather than cheapie stuff.

You might me able to donate it and get more out of a tax write-off than you would an ebay sale. Homeless people need to party too.

Subscribing..

Yea, I've got some of that stuff too and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.

Garage System for when you are tuning/tweaking the rides. Ya gotta have tunes for when the buds come by to stare at the engine. :club

Depends on what it is, might be valueless, but (ironically) if something like McIntosh, might have a market.

PM me I might be able to steer you a bit.

BigS, if it says "McIntosh", please send it to me. If it says Sanyo, please send it to the cheap Silverbullitt, or Spirit, who has plenty of room.

PS Ever heard of Pawn shops?

I kicked my obsloete stuff to the gameroom. Whatever you do don't leave it outside. The Midland/Odessa moonscape will sandblast it in 10 minutes.

Frank is on me and Spirit because we made fun of him on another thread today. I can't wait till he comes to TX without a passport. I'm turning him in to the border patrol.

On cold nights my old tube Mac keeps the house warm.

Goodwill-
And if its tube stuff- don't throw it away. Do a little research. Even some decent turntables can be sold on e-bay for a couple hundred bucks. (I had to think for a moment about what those things that played records were called)

Try craigslist for quick local cash sales. :thumbsup

Frank,

Thanks for offering my place to store everyone’s old, worn out, non productive, useless, decrepit, STUFF [for another 17 years]. But, my Dirigible Hanger is just about full.:bs

Sorry BIGS, I know if it is your stuff, it has to be good :thumbsup[unlike them old useless body parts that someone we know has lying around].

Good luck on finding a good home for your "classic" gear. :cheers

Thanks for the quality advice as well as the funnier posts! The receiver is Marantz, the speakers are BIC Formula 6, the turntable is Pioneer, the cassette deck is Teac and the equalizer is Soundcraftsman. It's all in top shape, although the boxes show some age, the stuff sealed inside is still great and includes all the manuals. I'm building a new place and the garage will be wired for A/V with the rest of the house. Just can't stand to send it to the dump but I don't want to store it for another 20 years.

I'm going to try Craigslist and a few pawn shops. If anyone here wants a shot at it PM me.

Chris yesterday and today we had/supposed to have 40-50 mph winds. Spring is coming too early to this blast cabinet!

BigS, I know Spirit has a backhoe, he could always bury a time capsule.

I was talking to my old College roommate earlier today and he remembered it well. He begged me not to dispose of it, too many lost memories (play on words).

I told him I'd take pictures of it and we can reminisce to those, versus having to store it for another 20 years.

FYI, www.audiogon.com is a good website for selling or buying high end audio gear, both new/used and vintage. I have used it a number of times. eBay would probably be a better venue for non-esoteric pieces like BigS has, but the return on time spent trying to sell these pieces might not be worthwhile. Donations aren't a bad idea.
