Drag tires on the front? Not the smartest thing to do, unless the CAV is 4 wheel drive, which I strongly doubt.

guy who owns the car is a respected racer and car builder...

I have no idea why. A drag car would have front tires that have a low rolling resistance and light weight. A road racing car would have tires that are good for lateral G's. What you describe fits neither case.
