Shift Cable Removal from Shift Lever Arm?

I have removed the retaining clip from the shift cable where the ball-type joint attaches to the shift lever arm....but now I cannot get the end fitting of the shift cable to pop off.
What, pray tell, is the secret?

you gotta pull on it real hard or try to pry it open, its a pain, but with enough force it will pop out.

No secret, they are a PITA to remove. Hard to get a hold of them with just your fingers and using pliers may mar the finish. Ideally if you had soft jaw pliers that fit the ball, pulling strait off the ball stud they will come off.

Thanks guys....I had done it before and thought it just came off after pulling the clip out. I guess I just don't remembering it being so ornery.
