Passport SRX just installed

Just got my GT back from having the SRX unit from passport installed with front and rear laser jamming. I have the same unit in a 996 Turbo and it has saved me several times. If anyone is interested or considering the installation pm me and I can give you some additional info. I will get some pictures and post them...if I can get DBK to help me...This is a time consuming install, it took the dealer (porsche) about 12 hours to do it. This was their first GT and it took them 3 hours longer than a normal Porsche. The guy is very very slow and careful...but he did a great job.

Where did you mount the unit in the car? Above the mirror? Which way did they run the wire to the unit?

Greg,
They installed the unit under the dash above where you leg would be on the gas pedal. There is good visability when you are in the drivers seat, but you cannot really see it from outside of the car. The mute button is under the start button, facing down, again so you cannot see it from outside.
This unit has two laser and one radar antenna in the front grill and a laser and radar antenna in the back of the car. They ran the wires up the drive tunnel and it seemed pretty straight forward.

Don,

Thank you for the info. I asked because my friend had his srx installed last week. His was put in above the mirror and it interfered with the radio antenna.

I called him to alert him to this thread after I had made my original post only to learn that the unit had been re-routed to under the steering wheel yesterday. It seems that the position is close to where yours is installed.

Greg,
Sounds like the same area. Mine may be a little further to the right. Do you know if he got the remote speaker and if so where did he put it?

Don,

I'm not sure. I only looked at his setup for about five minutes last weekend. I'll ask him tomorrow if he doesn't respond directly to this thread.

Don,

I would love to hear the ins and outs of this system. And I'm guessing others would too. Can't you post the main points, to save yourself multiple PMs? Or is it not fit for public consumption.

On Speed channel a small portion of a SEMA booth, explained a new anti- lazer
product. It automatically flashed(disabled) the reading lazer for about 10 seconds, then allowed the reader to get a speed. I wrote the name of the company but don't have it here, What made you go with the SRX? Is Passport the same Escort Co, and do they make the SRX?

Thanks,

Allan

Allan,
I have the same unit in my other car and it works this way. I am in Atlanta and laser is pretty common now. As you probably know with laser, when the normal detector goes off you already have a ticket. The SRX system from passport jams the laser signal so the officer never gets a reading. (The SRX sytem is considered to be about 96% effective.) There is a button in the car that you have to push to release the jamming process. (BTW..Escort calls it "Shifting" vs Jamming). Once you press the button twice, it stops the jamming process and they can get a speed on you. Some basic info...laser must be stationary to be used, max range is 1000 feet, typical range is usually around 500 feet. Laser is a more pinpoint beam than radar, they actually look through a sight at your car and point to a specific spot on the car. From the front that is usually the license plate or if no plate on front they aim at your headlights. From the back it is the license plate. Because it is more of a pinpoint beam you typically will not be able to pick up a signal when they are shooting someone else, unlike radar which sends out a wider beam and "splatters" therefore giving radar detectors in the area a chance to pick up the signal.
So having said all of that, which I got from reading the radar sites and passport, I have used my other one for two years and it has saved me about 10 times. I originally thought that when they could not get a reading and they could see you, they would stop you anyway just to hassle you. They have not done that so far with me, they just shoot and move on to the next car. My other car is a turbo porsche, so it would be a good target, but they just move on to the next car. My speeds have typically been 20 over the limit when they shot at me. If it was way over they might just chase you down anyway. Hope that helps, let me know what else I can provide.

How much does something like this cost? Is there a web-site or # to call for those of us that might be interested in purchasing one?

Don,

Thanks for the tutorial. I've been out of the fast car scene for a long time. I'm a very conservitive driver now. Still it's so easy in a vehicle like the GT to go fast real easy, without knowing it. The good fast cars make 90 feel like 60. Your explanation was a good lesson for me, bringing me up to SPEED :biggrin.

Michigan is a state where lots of people drive fast. The closer to Detroit the more agressive the driving gets. I doubt if DBK and other Detroit locals realize how different it is down there.

The Ford GT is looking fast even at the speed limit. I will most definitely invest in some device like the SRX. And for those times when the car is just begging to break a sweat, ah , can't be without.

One last question; Don does the SRX use the headlights to disrupt the lazer reader or another light source or what?

Cheers,

Allan

Piccola and Allan,
Mine cost $ 2200 installed. That is on the high side but I could not find anyone else that I had faith in. I think the unit configured like mine is $ 1700 or 1800 before the install. The guy that put mine in really considered every move before he made it. May have been overkill...but it looks great and works as advertised. On the question about the laser jamming, it does not use the headlights, it is emitting a signal of it's own as I understand it, but there are others on the forum that can answer that one better than me.

Thanks Don,

I remember buying the BIG Escort when it first came out. Then the small passport, sold my Escort for a good price. The passport realy went up in price.
I believe I even went to the Escort factory to buy the passport. Maybe centerpunh was working there :biggrin :biggrin . Small world.

Damn those things are expensive. But worth rising insurance rates.

The link only said it "shifted" the lazer, didn't say how.

Don,

I heard back from my friend. He was told by the installer that the speaker is in the display.

Perhaps he's talking about a different speaker?

centerpunch is right on the money as usual! Depending on where you mount the display, you may not be able to hear it with the windows open or the radio on. The aux speaker amplifies the sound for cars with more noise.

I will post the pictures...I am just a little challenged right now.

There are a few excellent remote radar/laser detection units on the market. I'm still shopping but found this article helpful.
