Cool Video - not sure his fact are all accurate regarding the GT but cool

Any racing fan nut, automotive enthusiast or classic car nut worth his driving mocs knows the story of the Ford GT40. In the early 1960s Ferrari was on a six-time winning streak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That's when Henry Ford II initiated proceedings to take over the Maranello sportscar-maker and racing team.

As the story goes, though, the notoriously intractable Enzo Ferrari didn't like the terms and canceled the deal at the 11th hour. Ford was left holding his hat and out of spite commissioned the GT40 with the explicit aim of knocking his Italian counterpart off his high (prancing) horse. The result was that, with the GT40, Ford won Le Mans four times in a row.

Now the Ferrari 250 GTO wasn't one of the cars that won at Le Mans during Ferrari's six-year reign. It was busy winning other categories during the same period. But that's alright, because the car in the video after the jump isn't a real GTO anyway. It is a real Ferrari, though: a 365 GTB/4 Daytona rebodied to look like a GTO. And it's not facing off against a GT40 either – that's actually the modern tribute, the 2005 Ford GT.

Do either of those facts mitigate the sight of seeing these cars take to the mountain roads outside Malibu, California? Hardly. But don't take our word for it, follow the jump to watch the video for yourself and see Matt Farrah of The Smoking Tire take the joyride of his life.

There seems to be some doubt that it is a even rebodied 365 GTB/4 Daytona.

Whatever, it's always nice to see a red GT, what with them being the fastest and all.... :biggrin

Great video, these mountains are 5 miles from where I live. We drive them all the time with the Southern California Mini Manaics' Mini Cooper Club, the SO Cal Viper Club, and the Ford GT guys. They are amazing twisties. Did not see any Ventura County Sheriffs on their motorcycles on any of the roads, which is a common deterrent to entraînement grand de vitesse! :thumbsup

Big stink over on Ferrarichat about the "GTO". The car is actually a rebodied Datsun Z car chassis and suspension. The debate is as to whether the engine and tranny are Ferrari (from a 365 GTB or GTC). Matt, the host of the video even responded to the thread on F-chat. Basically, purists vs. Enthusiasts.

Wow, well I hope that the guy that owns the GTO truly believes what he said about the cars provenance, otherwise he's like the guy that buys a fake watch and pretends its the real thing. But anyway, even if it is a complete fake, it's a pretty gorgeous one. :thumbsup

And it was a fun vid to watch. Thanks 'Drew for posting it up!!! :cheers

The GTO has a 6 cylinder engine...truth finally came out on the F-chat forum. The car owner didn't tell the host and film crew the whole story. It's a re-bodied Datsun 240Z.

:lol

A re-bodied Datsun doesn't quite have the same cachet as a 250GTO.

:lol That's why he was SO insistent on comparing it to a real "$16 million dollar GTO" :rofl. That's actually really sad. He shoulda just said it's a rebodied 240Z which pays "tribute to" the GTO. I can respect the truth. Stupid poseur :rolleyes

If that's true, the guy hasta be looking for a large ROCK to crawl under by now, as he's just become the north end of a south bound horse.

This is the GTO replica I was referring to:
Specs & Details:
Auction Date: 10 Jan 2008
No Sale: $1,000,000
Miles: 850
VIN: 03873
Engine: 12
Transmission: manual
Exterior Color: silver
Interior Color: black

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Tribute in Silver with Black Interior and Blue Racing Seats. Carrying full FIA documentation, this handmade Aluminium 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Tribute was fabricated using many rare factory components and assembled to exact Ferrari manufacturing standards. In the early 1990's Lord Paul Vestley of England, owner of S/N 4115 GTO commissioned Bob Smith in England to make an exact copy of 4115 (supposedly at a cost of around $1Million) so that Vestley could continue to vintage race without exposing 4115 to the possibility of an accident as the value had risen to a $6-8Million value at that time. (Current values run anywhere from $15-30Million). Smith took exact measurement and it is said he used a computer to generate the car before he made the mock up. Smith built 3 cars at the same time as S/N3873 all are perfect examples. He had DK Engineering also from England build a correct 250 (3 liter) Colombo Motor to GTO spec's. DK used correct sand cast Weber carbs (6-38 DCN) they also built the motor using a dry sump as the GTO had and a correct 5 speed aluminum case transmission. All gauges, seats, steering wheel are correct for a GTO. The chasis is a correct tubular built in light gauges the GTO was with an exact wheel base. The car was finished in 1993 and Paul read the car ar a number of events in Europe until it was discovered that it was a 3873 not 4115 and he was told not to come back with the car to the events. Paul sold the car to John Calley (Sony Pictures) who sent the car to Rudi K. restorations in Canada. At that time it was not accepted that a rebodied correct car would run in the Vintage races or Milli's. Since then FIA has agreed to accept cars that meet very stringent requirements. S/N3873 in fact was inspected in 2005 by Jeremy Hall (FIA) representative England. He after a day long inspection gave the car its FIA passport allowing it to run in all vintage races and Milli's anywhere in the world. Jeremy indicated that FIA would only accept approx 6 rebodied GTO'S the 3 that Smith did and 3 more that were done by Wayne Obrey in Wisconsin as they were the only one's that are in fact correct in every way to the original.

Looks like The Smoking Tire is going to suffer the consequences for somebody else telling lies. Too bad you can't take anybody's word anymore. :frown

I kinda feel bad for the host Matt Farrah. He seemed like a decent, enthusiastic car guy making a show out of his passion for performance cars.
