Question for other GT Owners:

When you pull the release handle for the Gas Cap, does the Cap spring open?
I'm questioning whether mine works correctly.
I have to pull up the release handle, and then pry open (lift up) the cap...
Seems like it should pop or spring open, but doesn't.

Thanks,
RickM

RickM,

At first (back in December), mine used to pop open nicely. Tonight I had to fill her up, and the cover wouldn't open unless I fiddled with it for a few seconds. It probably wants a bit more spring tension.

I have the same problem with my front hood release although it works fine with the key fob.

I'll bet they all need the cable adjusted to create more tension.

We are talking about filler caps aren't we?!

Mine has never popped up - I've tried fiddling with the spring and putting fine machine oil on it... but it needs prying open with a credit card.

Me too. Mine almost needs three hands to open.

Fuel cap

Mine never pops open. I usually have to hook a fingernail under it to get it to release.

Mine pops up, but I was already suspicious because it seemed to lag a bit. Like I pull the lever...and...and...and then the cap pops up. Sounds like I'm not the only one with a fussy fuel cap.

So is there a fix?

Thanks for everyones input!
After confirming that it should pop up on it's own, I was able to fix mine. :thumbsup

The fix took about 10 minutes.
I simply used WD-40 to oil the hinge and spring.
Then spent about 10 minutes working the cap up & down to work in the oil (with additional oil applications every 2-3 minutes).
After about 10 minutes of opening/closing the lid about 100-200 times, it works great...Pops up with pretty significant force - Which is quite suprising since it was very, very stiff to begin with.

We'll see how long it takes until it needs oil again, but works great now!
(No longer takes 3 hands to get the dang thing open!)

I'm surprised about the number of other people with the same problem.
Seems almost like a 50/50 ratio.

Thanks,
RickM

Rick,

I asked around and there has been a couple of GTs were the rubber bumper has had enough adhesion to stick the cap closed. They said a drop of WD40 on the rubber bumper pad corrected the issue.

After hearing this, I'll keep my rubber bumper lubed!

Hope this helps,

Tonight I shall be heading for my barn at the dead of night to oil my cap spring and raise and lower my flap about 200 times. I will also be lubing my rubber bumper area too.

Is this normal behaviour?! :biggrin

I think that would be described aS 'WANKING' YOUR CAR.. Maybe, like the Zymoling without gloves, do it in the barn, doors locked... If you want to avoid any dubious headlines in the Sun... :biggrin :biggrin :biggrin

It's normal if you enjoy it and feel relaxed about it.. If not yet come out (of the barn) , wear a leather mask.. That let's you enjoy it without anxiety attacks:banana :banana then, as you develop, you'll be able to leave the mask in the closet... :biggrin

I love the Britts !
