FGT in Middle TN

Newbie here searching for an owner who can discuss their car. Considering purchase but need direction. Long history with and knowledgeable re. air-cooled 911’s but the Fords are a different animal. Anyone in the Nashville area? Thanks in advance, Jeff

I am here in marietta ga and have had a long history with Porsches and my 2006 FGT since purchasing it new, so I can certainly compare the two.

Jeff, welcome and hope you get one soon.

You'll hear this multiple times: Respect the power of the car. It will swap ends if you get into the throttle in a turn and the tires let go. Not as quickly as early 911s, but you need to be aware of it. Take a look on the internet for Ford GT crashes and usually, that's how they crashed. If you have driven an early 911 on the track, you should have honed your reflexes to handle it, but with almost 600HP under your foot, the GT will break traction much more easily. When you get your car, go somewhere safe and explore the handing dynamics.

P.S. I have a 1973 911.

you are a lucky man to have that car, prices have gone so far out of site, that no one can afford one ! These baby boomers who never owned a "PORSH" and always wanted one, having no idea of the value have bid them up astronomically to where I will never be able to afford one (or do not want to LOL)

Well, you guys are right. The early air-cooled Porsche market is no longer for the enthusiast but for the investor. I was fortunate to experience these cars when more affordable and now only drive the turbos when the Nashville traffics less, on weekends. Have a ‘79 turbo so I know about the ease of swapping ends but albeit with much less power than a Ford GT. Was really trying to get some input from those who’d possibly had both Porsche and FGT re. fun factor, service, eg. maintenance/parts cost and anything else you’d like to emphasize. Realize this is somewhat non-specific, but feel free to chime in. All perspectives are welcome!

You are certainly correct regarding the air-cooled Porsche market. These cars have ceased to be affordable by enthusiasts and good examples are highly sought after by investors. I was fortunate in acquiring 911's when they were affordable, one of which is a '79 turbo, ie. widowmaker, and thus I understand the fear of swapping ends albeit with much less hp than a FordGT! I would be appreciative of anyone's comments re. the "fun factor", maintenance of a FordGT and especially so versus the Porsche by those having this insight. Recognize that this is a non-specific request but appreciate everyone's perspective and input. All comments are welcome!

Maybe we should change the title of this thread to "old Porsches."

Speaking of which, I now have my 1973 911 running again. My brother was here a week and a half ago, and helped me get the engine cranking over by hand, and then put the engine/tranny back in the car. Last week I fired it up, and found that the old bad gas had pretty much gunked up the whole fuel system. The ethanol-contaminated fuel just doesn't last like the pure dead dinosaur juice. It absorbs water, breaks down, and leaves crud everywhere if you let it sit for very long.

So I drained the tank, blew out the lines, had to squirt carb cleaners into and tap on the fuel pump a bunch of times to get it freed up and put it back in the car. Then I had to take off the CIS fuel distributor and squirt it liberally and blow compressed air through it to free up the metering plunger, and the same with the injectors.

Then it was running on 4 or 5 cylinders, which turned out to be too high resistance in a couple of the spark plug wires, but it took me hours to trace that down. Yes, I ordered a new set of spark plug wires and will put them in tomorrow. After all that messing around, it is finally running smoothly.

Next project is to clean and rebuild the brakes if necessary. After that, I will install the oil-fed Carrera chain tensioners. Then I can start putting back on the bumpers and the glass and last, the interior. Lots of work, but it's a fun driver with a 3.0 SC engine and about 230 ponies in a 2300-lb car.

I'm a bit of a closet Porsche guy. I have a Albert Blue '70 911 E. My MFI unit pretty much failed. Just had it rebuilt and will reinstall it. The car is old school driving pleasure. Maybe 155 hp, but light and nimble. Brings to mind the adage..."It's more fun to drive a low horsepower car fast, than a high horsepower car slow". Another car in the same same category is the 270 hp NSX. Both driver's cars.

Very nice. Never forget, those older cars were lighter. And comparing the old 911s to the actual generation does not make sense, their wheelbase changed so much (bigger), it is more like a different car.
