Raceway Park closes drag strip

The iconic Raceway Park has ended drag racing as they will be leasing space to an auto salvage auction company. While racing had become less frequent over the years due to ever-tightening noise restrictions-only 10 unmuffled days a year, it is still sad to see the home of the Summernationals close its doors.

Glad I got a picture of my last Summernationals run.

Yes, I just learned about this today, Don. A Jersey landmark.

You are right Howard-it was a real Jersey landmark. They will still keep the other venues going - motorcycles, road course, and drifting. But drag racing was the heart of the operation and what gave Raceway Park its national reputation.

Hey Don,

RRRRRRRaceway Park!

A sad day for auto sports in New Jersey. Story even made the front page of today's Star Ledger.

Great picture! Certainly makes for unforgettable personal memories.

What's with the NASCAR crowd?

BTW, your front wheels were off the ground.

They see the future.

In 15 years, people will congregate to see who has the fastest phone.

Englishtown! What a historic part of NHRA drag racing, this really sucks. Any reasons other than the noise restrictions for their decision?

I wondered why the hood was blocking my vision.

More lucrative to lease out the space for the auto auction company to store cars than to run a limited number of races due to noise restrictions.
