bonehead,

Yes, I forgot to mention this and you are correct that the fuse block IS located in the passenger foot well.

I wish that I could get my hands on a few of these blown gauges so that I can examine the internal circuit board.

Jay

Thanks, Jay. Sign me up for one if you start producing.

Fascinating stuff, if your theory is correct, then indeed your design would fix things? Last time I got this involved in gauges was when my POS 246GTS's gauges all crapped out. I couldn't afford a new set so took them all to pieces and soldered in new diodes that I 'd bought at Radio Shack. Total cost a few $$ versus thousands for ferrari OE.

cobra,

Exactly, I couldn't of said it any better... Also, a long time ago one of our forum members (Richardhead, I think) was concerned about those air motor coils picking up stray magnetic fields also. Thanks for the info, Jay

The microprocessor drives the gauge air motor coils directly with no protection on the leads for emf generated by the coils. I only checked two gauges but the micro was no longer clocking in either defective gauge. Not saying it isn't power supply related, but could be they should have used a buffer circuit for the air motor coils.

Thanks Jay, a couple of questions please:
What about the effect of your gauge protection system on the new Autometer gauge set (less Speedo and Tach) ?
Any issues with the new combination of gauges (Speedo/Tach remaining OEM with an air core motor and rest of the new gauges have a stepper motor ?
(new gauges- less Speedo and Tach- to be released this February).

I think the 10-20 you were deciding to make up might be spoken for but if there is one left I would love to have it. Thank you for continuing to try and come up with a workable solution to saving our existing gauges.

I also had considered supplying this circuit with the output of a DC-DC converter. Your solution seems more elegant and robust.

Dear Dr. Frankenstein, please put me on the list for one. YOur next task is to reanimate old, burned out gauges. My tach and speedo are both shot and I would furnish if I had a replacement. Perhaps someone here can furnish Jay some bad gauges? I sent my previous bad ones to Ford. I also might add, there was a question of corrosion in the gauges as well. Nothing was ever confirmed.

Let me call GtGuys.
