Very cool. Imagine what the original would have been worth.

...but, in 1970 when GM finally got round to dropping 454s into 'Vettes they were a lousy 390 horses only. That's why I bought my LS-6 Powered Chevelle SS 454 instead of another 'Vette.

I was NOT happy about it either. To this day I'm still 'ticked'.

You can thank the Feds and the EPA.

There was GM strike in 1970 too; so probably didnt drop those 454s in for awhile....most likely on a Monday morning too :(

Then why/how did LS-6s make it into Chevelles?

It was plan asinine regardless (not putting 'em into 'Vettes).

The replacement for the solid lifter hi po 427 for 1970 was supposed to be a 454 ci, 460 (rated) horse, aluminum head, single 4 barrel engine with (gulp) 12.5:1 compression. However, it was to be known as the LS-7 (note the slight variation to the LS-6 454-450hp Chevelle). It was never produced, with a variety of reasons/excuses provided. The original LT series engine (LT/1) was a small block, 350 ci engine that was 350/370hp in 1970 1/2 Corvettes & 350/360hp in the newly rebodied Z28. I don't doubt the veracity of this author's story, but the LT engines were small blocks. The "L" series (L68, L71, L72, etc.) were big block 427 (L78 was the 396-375hp), and the LS series were 454 engines.
