Taking a stab at it in order of appearance:

1951 625 Formula 1 car Juan Frolian Gonzalez, Piero Taruffi, Luigi Villerosi & Alberto Ascari were the main drivers
1967 312 Formula 1 car CHris Amon, Mike Parkes, Ludovico Scarfiotti & Lorenzo Bandini were the main drivers
1971 312 B2 Formula 1 car Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni were the main drivers
2003 GA Formula 1 car Michael Schumacher & Rubens Barrichello were the drivers

They certainly didn't pick the prettiest for the ad or the most famous.

Except for the last one no time just memory. Total time research 3 minutes, maybe. The last one was the trickest because of the color scheme.

I recognized the others immediately upon seeing the ad.

Why would Shell and/or Ferrari do an add for another make of car such as Aston-Martin or Porsche? Does make much sense. Showcase your own products and not the competition.

BTW I think the models I identified are correct but I could be wrong.

It was a quick stab at it.

guess I was thinking too far outside the box....but I have seen ads where one company uses another competitors product subtley in the background to make some sort of "statement".....obviously this isn't the case here....as I now very clearly see......guess I need to get over my Japanese jet lag before I post anymore..................(I hang my head in shame)...

The chap who directed the ad is the same fellow who made the Honda 'Cog' advert.

Glad you all enjoyed it - it's a fine piece of work and the sounds are sublime!

The newer F1 cars was driven by drivers with helmet designs NOT looking like any of their official drivers in newer time. (Schumi, Alesi, Irvine, Barichello etc) Who actually drove the cars will be hard to guess...

I agree that none of the original drivers drove the cars; some of those still alive probably couldn't fit into the car if they so desired. Bandini was killed racing; I believe at Monaco. Regazzoni (at Long Beach?) was paralyzed as the result of a racing accident. Many of the others with the exception of Chris Amon, Jacky Ickx, and I think Mike Parkes are deceased.

Again this is purely from memory so apolgies if I have "killed off" some one who is still alive.
