View Full Version : Erratic oil pressure reading at freeway speeds

Hello everyone,
My new GT has an erratic oil pressure gauge reading when everything is warm and at freeway speeds (high gear). The gauge slowly bounces high and low, between about 30 to 50 PSI. This occurs about one cycle per every two seconds. Increasing the engine RPM's will immediately cause the gauge to read higher until the 75 PSI limit is reached. It behaves as if an oil pressure sender has a “bad spot” in this pressure region. The gauge appears to read smoothly under all other conditions.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior?
Thanks, Jay
NOTE: See my post later on in this thread...

As far as the Fuel gauge goes. I can fill the tank up but the gauge stays on empty after starting the engine and driving away. At some point in the next driving cycle or two, the gauge comes alive and reads somewhere near full depending on when it decided to wake up.

Running man great to hear from you again , as for the fuel gauge, make sure the key is out or in the off position when filling the tank, like all my other fords, it reads were you left off, then when you turn the key off it re sets itself to the new setting, should do it. If not the pump should self lube going up and down, junk could have built up in tank as alot of these jems have sat for 2,4 ,8 months with little or no gas and not moved, so pump gets a little lazy. For oil gauge ,its a real gauge no dummy or preset number, like all old hot rods if the oil is getting old or breaking down it will flux, the revs brings up that pressure, how many miles are on her, also if you keep gunning the pressure will flux alot almost surging, thats a real gauge , on all new cars its a fake set at a certain point , unless all the oil leaks out it will read the same no matter what. hope this can help gtjoey 1314 :thumbsup

OK- I'm a newbie here, first post...
I had my 2006 out for the first time today, and immediately noticed the same super erratic readings on the oil pressure gauge. At a steady cruise (say 2k RPM, light throttle), the gauge will rapidly fluctuate from around 35 psi - 60 psi or so. At high rpm, yes, it stays around 75 and is reasonably steady.
I see this thread is somewhat old, is it possible only 2 cars have this problem, or am I missing other posts on the subject?
As a racer, seeing an opg fluctuate like that on a dry sump car is highly unsettling!
Please share if you have any feedback.

Colin,
This is unrelated to the thread, but wanted to welcome you to the site seeing its your first post. I've been a big fan of your website for quite some time--some very tasty morsels pass through your doors. I saw a black GT in one of your pics and wondered. Congratulations. I'm on the brink myself--looking at a Tungsten near me on Tuesday. This site is a Terrific resource.

My oil pressure gauge acts up all the time. It seems to be a rather common problem.

Hi Will,
Thanks for the kind words. I'll have to try to hide the GT better in the future! LOL
If you ever make it up my way, make sure to let me know if you can stop in.
FWIW, my buddy's dealership here in Milwaukee just got a Tungsten 06 in, his first GT, that I think he will sell under MSRP...but don't quote me on that. Email me direct if you want his contact info. colin@colinsclassicauto.com

Update!
I finally replaced the oil pressure sender tonight and that solved the problem. It only took 7,958 miles to get this done.

I'll always remember the 229mph weekend at Chowchilla! Seems like we always went faster in the shallow waters. I believe the racecourse there is an irrigation pond for the almond groves all around it, right? We must have been getting something like "ground effect" in a plane when you're close to the ground-extra lift. Extra "drive" off the bottom of a shallow lake? Who knows-- but it was sure fun!!:thumbsup We never had the heads or the pan off that weekend, either, our competitors couldn't figure that part out!:confused
Anyway, thanks for the welcome and for jogging one of my best memories!:thumbsup

Hi, bony, thanks for the welcome!
The BFH was loads of fun, it really got the juices flowing!
I hand-delivered the first Jet Ski to hit California, to Kenny West in Fresno. I had bought his "Good as Hell" Kindsvater BGH hydro from him. He originally had a Ford engine in it to use it for a playboat, and I traded him the Jet Ski for the Ford engine. So I could put the Ford in it when I got ready to sell it. Anyway, Kenny and his buddies ran the Ski back and forth in the canal there in town, stopped lotsa traffic just to watch---a real happening.
I eventually set the UBFH record at 170, at Ming, and a guy here still has the boat, and the engine , which hasn't been fired since Ming. I ran a leak check on it when I got home--all leaks 2% or less, I pickeled it, and it is going back in the boat-- which has been restored right up to being ready to shoot the (same) colors back on!!
I spent some time with Harold Kindsvater there too--Helluva guy!! One of my all-time favorites!:thumbsup

Eddie, it looks like you have all kinds of neat toys to play with. It's cool you were able to keep some of the stuff that was part of your vast racing history. Back in the '70's I had a Sanger 17-10 flat with a BB Chevy that was a lot of fun. I need to go through all my old pictures one of these days and see what I have of you in the boats & rails. You and Ercie were always gracious to us pesky fans. Thanks for the memories. :wink

I'm glad we did keep some of the racers- we have our "First in the Fours" dragster, and our 229MPH Blown Fuel Hydro, on display at our dealership.
I had a Sanger runnerbottom/BB Chevy that I really enjoyed-- sold it and have missed it ever since! Probably out of all the toys I've ever had, and sold, that's the one I wish I still had!
The fans, like yourself, were always fun and gracious, and what we miss the most, now that we're homebodies. Thank YOU for the memories!:thumbsup

The sending units on several of the modular based vehicles from the factory fail over due time. They have replacement units that solve the issue. It is a very common problem with the Lightning pickups as well. They are easily replaceable with simple hand tools and the slightest amount of mechancial knowledge if anyone wants to take on the task themself...
Eddie, I'm a bit younger than most of the crowd here, so I never really followed your career as it happened, but I know of your accomplishments now and I'm honored just to be cruising the same websites as you. It's a blessing we had people like yourself in the racing and high performance industry. I was born and raised in Bakersfield Ca, so I attended Ming lake races often when I was younger in the late 80's and early 90's, what a sight to see... Stan

Can you share your impressions of the Atom?
-Chris
We're straying pretty far off topic, but-
Because You Asked--
The Atom is more like my Top Fuel Dragster. Awesome acceleration, instant throttle response. Stark, Raw, look around inside and you see the bones and components. No attempt made to cover anything up, or hide a component for appearance sake. Even getting in and out is similar. The belts/harness are pretty much the same. When the engine fires, you can feel it in your butt. There's no play(looseness, or "slop") in the steering, clutch, throttle- all very familiar sensations to the world's fastest accelerating car! They are both intensely responsive to driver inputs, whatever they might be. Both have supercharged and fuel-injected all-aluminum engines right behind the driver. Look ahead and you see a relatively long skinny nose with the front wheels/tires well separated fron the chassis- lots and lots of similarities! :thumbsup
But the Atom is much better 'cause you can take someone along to laugh WITH you! In the Top Fuel car, you laugh alone! Better with two!
And you can---(gasp)---TURN CORNERS! :eek Wow! What a concept! :eek THAT is gonna take some getting used to! :lol
And the Atom doesn't need fresh rods and pistons installed every four and a half seconds, either!
Plus, you can go play anytime you want, and anywhere you want, even at night and even without the track/street being lit.
I like it! :thumbsup

I have seen the Atom, but a hot ride would be a kick!
It was not my original intention to hijack this thread so completely!
But since we're here- here's a post I put on the Atom forum.
I've passenger-demo'd 12 folks already!!
No, 13! I was toodling along in town, on my way out of town, and this tricked Jeep with three 20-something guys wave frantically and one hangs out the side and says" Hey Eddie Hill! I 'm 24 today! How 'bout a ride? So I says OK! and we do a few hot laps in the parking lot of the Lake Wichita Public Boat Ramp--including a couple of fairly lurid slides, with appropriate tire-squealing and MUCH Giggling in the cockpit!! And not all of it from my side!! He thanked me profusely and declared me "An Awesome Dude!"
And everyone left laughing!:lol
The other demo rides were at the little Wichita Valley Airport, where one of my friends built an RV-6 homebuilt airplane--I offered to swap rides with him and he thought I meant me trade him my Atom for his RV!! No, No! Not trade vehicles--trade RIDES! So he climbs in and I very politely let the clutch out and gently motor up to about 2500 r's and NAIL IT to 6500, quick shift to second and up to 6000, hard on the brakes, U-turn- and repeat! I haven't heard that much laughter in years!!:lol
Another plane owner's wife said(of her ride in the Atom), that I "made her summer!" Later told me that she had stood in line at one of my races, to get my autograph. Just before we left the airport she told me that her 17 year old son has an Atom as his computer background! How cool is that? And so she knew what it was when we first got there.
One of my friends landed his Cub while we were playing around between the hangars, and asked wottleshedoo on the runway? So I did a 0-100-0 each way, on the runway, while my passenger kept a lookout for a plane that was just about due in. (Uncontrolled airport- no traffic controller or radio) Relatively short runway, but we had LOTS of room left over at each end!
One of my "mature" male passengers said, immediately after the first full-throttle low-gear blast--"THAT THING'S INSANE!!
I couldn't agree more!!:banana

Steve, the tech that installed my new sender,( and a customer at my motorcycle/ATV dealership) said he'd like to ride in a GT sometime, so we went out to give him a ride and verify that the fluctuations were, in fact, eliminated.

Thanks, Jay!! It was a fun day!
